So the New York Jets have found the running back they hope will add depth to their running game in Kahlil Bell. The Jets brought in a few running backs today, including Steve Slaton,to work out and came away with Bell.
The Jets running game has taken a hit with Bilal Powell missing time due to a concussion and Joe McKnight dealing with a high-ankle sprain. That leaves Shonn Greene as the only viable running back on the roster at full health, unless you consider Tim Tebow to be a running back these days.
Bell spent three of the last four years with the Chicago Bears. He was signed from the Bears practice squad in 2009 and would later start the last two weeks of 2011 as the Bears starting running back. He was released earlier this season on October 15th, made expendable by Matt Forte’s health and the Bears signing Michael Bush.
Bell could be forced into action fairly quickly this week against the St. Louis Rams, but would most likely just become a depth piece once Powell and McKnight are cleared for more action.
To make room for Bell on the roster, the Jets released linebacker Aaron Maybin. Maybin led the Jets in sacks last year but hasn’t been nearly as good this year making him expendable. Maybin recorded six sacks with the Jets last season in limited playing time but had yet to record a sack this season. Maybin will be placed on waivers, which he is expected to clear given his salary and lack of production. Once he clears waivers he will become a free agent once again.
