Denver Broncos RB Willis McGahee will have an MRI on his right knee after he sustained an injury Sunday in a game the Broncos won against their division rivals, the San Diego Chargers. The Broncos won 30-23 even after McGahee went out in the second quarter with the injury. McGahee looked to be on his way to a great day statistically went he went down with 55 yards on just seven carries midway through the second quarter.

The Broncos have been clicking on all cylinders and McGahee and the running game have been a huge part of that. If McGahee has to miss time it would hurt the Broncos, but RBs Ronnie Hillman, Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno are all capable of producing in the running and passing game.

McGahee has been optimistic about the injury and says he will be fine. He was able to return to the sideline Sunday after the injury and rode on a stationary bike. The knee was swollen quite a bit, but didn’t seem to be too serious. Hopefully the MRI comes back negative and McGahee will return pretty soon.

McGahee has solid stats this season with the help of a solid passing game: 731 yards on the ground, 221 in the air and four total touchdowns. Before this injury, he was on pace for career highs in total yardage.

The Broncos need to be cautious with McGahee and make sure he is ready to go for the playoffs. There is no need to rush McGahee back because the Broncos’ schedule is much weaker now than it was at the beginning of the season. If McGahee is out for an extended period of time it could put a damper on Denver’s Super Bowl chances.
