The Arizona Cardinals will get some much needed relief in the back field on Sunday. RB Beanie Wells will return to the field for the first time since the third game of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles. Wells brings a much needed boost on short runs that RB LaRod Stephens-Howling since he took over for the injured Ryan Williams. However, he has rushed for over 100 yards twice this season including a career high effort against the Atlanta Falcons. Stephens-Howling has done the best he could running behind the worst offensive line in football.
How will Wells’ return help the Cardinals?
The Cardinals have struggled to get the run game going on first down all season long. Wells gives the Cardinals the opportunity to have a second and seven or six which, in turn, gives the Cardinals a chance to run or pass on second down. This will change the way defenses has to play them drastically. It plays right into the hands of Larry Fitzgerald. This will soften up the coverage a little bit and allow a quick slant to the receiver which will either leave a third and short, or maybe a first down.
This is the best news the Cardinals have received in a long time. Injuries, injuries, and more injuries are the only headlines Arizona has been making since they started this losing streak seven long weeks ago, including the bye week. The Cardinals finally have something to hope for this week after a grueling four week stretch which included the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, and Falcons.
The St. Louis Rams are last place in the division, but they were able to tie the 49ers. The Cardinals have not seriously competed in a game, offensively speaking, in the current funk they are in. However, I expect Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt to let his offense fly this week because he now playing for his job.
