NFL Rumors: Michael Vick Could Play Monday Night, Andy Reid Says He’s Still Eagles Starting QB
After it was largely assumed that Nick Foles would remain the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback for the rest of the season, Michael Vick is still the number one signal-caller according to his coach.
“We’ll see how he does this week but yeah,” said head coach Andy Reid when asked if Vick is still the starter.
Remember that Vick’s status for Week 12 against the Carolina Panthers is highly questionable, because he has still not been cleared after suffering a concussion.
Vick went down in the first half of Week 10 against the Dallas Cowboys and the rookie, Foles, took over the starting spot. But after a terrible performance by Foles this past Sunday against the Washington Redskins, his future as a starter this season could be in question.
Considering it will be almost impossible for the Eagles to reach the playoffs now that they’re 3-7, it looked like Foles would remain the starting QB until season’s end so he could show off his stuff.
I don’t know exactly how much Vick can improve the Eagles’ starting line-up at this point, but I would love to see him return. The way I see it, Foles is certainly not NFL-ready at this point and if anybody on the team can electrify this Eagles’ offense, it is Vick.
Foles had a very impressive preseason, but has struggled to produce and has been turnover-prone in regular season play. If Foles does start, he will be under the bright lights of Monday Night Football for the first time in a prime-time battle against the Carolina Panthers.
The pressure of a nationally televised game is a lot for a rookie, so I feel strongly that a veteran like Vick is going to produce at a much greater rate than Foles, who is still developing.
I still would be very surprised if either Vick or Reid were still with the Eagles next season, but the things that they do during the remainder of this season will be very important to their legacies. A lot of times, all that is remembered about a player or a coach’s tenure with a team is the way in which they exited.
If Vick is cleared to play by game-time Monday night, it would be foolish on the Eagles’ part to bench the veteran if they still wish to win games this season.
