Pittsburgh Steelers to Sign a Quarterback and Wide Reciever Today

In today’s Pittsburgh Steelers press conference, Head Coach Mike Tomlin make some important announcements regarding this weekend’s roster for their matchup with the Cleveland Browns.

The Steelers are quite short-handed after multiple injuries to not only starting but backup quarterbacks and wide receivers, so the staff brought in some free agents for workouts and plan to move quickly to get a quarterback and wide receiver under contract today to have them ready for their upcoming game.

The 2 quarterbacks the Steelers brought in for workouts were former New England Patriots signal caller Brian Hoyer and former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mike Kafka. Both are similar type players, but for me the advantage would have to go to Hoyer considering their histories. Personally, I’d much prefer to bring in a backup quarterback that was drafted by Brian Billichick than by Andy Reed. Neither bring much of a resume’ with them as far as playing time, but even coming out of college I felt like Hoyer a better prospect than Kafka. It would be worth noting that former Steelers quarterback Jerrod Johnson, currently playing for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL, was part of the Steelers roster until final cuts. Why they didn’t reach out to him is a mystery to me, but I digress.

On the wide receiver front, the Steelers brought in 2 guys who’ve been on the Steelers roster before. Derrick Williams was originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 3rd round in 2009 and did a stint with the Lions and Steelers. Williams was one of the top do-it-all athletes in the nation while in college but never really got traction as an NFL wide receiver. He’s a little undersized and not overly fast, but a very good athlete.

The other wide receiver brought in is a name all Steelers fans should know. Plaxico Burress was part of the Steelers for many years, first being drafted in the 1st round of the 2000 draft. He was with the Steelers for 5 seasons before heading off to the New York Giants, New York Jets, and the Oneida Correctional Facility. Burress is the wide out of the 2 I would want on the roster. He’s 35 but there’s little doubt he can still play, and would give the Steelers a big red zone target they lack right now. I was honestly shocked he wasn’t signed by them earlier in the season.

Ironically a quick search of Wikipedia shows Williams and Burress both as members of the Steelers currently while Kafka and Hoyer are both still listed as free agents. Ideally for me I’d like to see Hoyer and Burress signed today. Stay tuned for more updates.
