Vincent Jackson led the San Diego Chargers with 1,098 receiving yards during the 2008 NFL season, led San Diego with 1,167 receiving yards in 2009 and led San Diego with 1,106 receiving yards last season.
Jackson also led the Lightning Bolts with nine touchdown receptions in 2009 and nine TD receptions in 2011. San Diego’s record with Jackson was 32-20 from 2008-2011, while they were 6-6 without him.
San Diego decided to let Jackson go as a free agent during the off-season. Jackson signed a five year deal worth $55.5 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on March 13, 2012.
San Diego’s front office brought in former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem to be Jackson’s primary replacement. San Diego signed Meachem to a four year deal worth $25.9 million on March 13, 2012.
Meachem’s average salary ranks fourth on San Diego’s roster, which makes his season even more disappointing.
In nine games this season, Meachem has 14 receptions, 207 receiving yards and two TD receptions. Jackson has 42 receptions, 863 receiving yards and seven TD receptions in 10 games.
Jackson had 216 receiving yards in a game against New Orleans this season.
Jackson’s seven TD receptions rank seventh in the NFL, his 863 receiving yards rank ninth in the NFL and he ranks 42nd in receptions. Meachem ranks 81st in TD receptions, 139th in receiving yards and 173rd in receptions.
San Diego’s next game is against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday in San Diego at 1:05 PM PDT. Baltimore allows 7.0 yards per pass attempt which ranks 16th in the NFL.
I did not expect Meachem to match Jackson’s production, but I expected him to be better than he has been so far this season.
