The San Diego Chargers made former Baltimore Ravens/former Kansas City Chiefs left tackle Jared Gaither their fifth highest paid player based on average salary when he got a four year deal worth $24.6 million.

Gaither helped San Diego improve as an offensive line because Philip Rivers was sacked 28 times in 11 games prior to the Lightning Bolts claiming Gaither off waivers while Rivers was sacked twice in five games with Gaither.

According to Michael Gehlken of nctimes.com, Gaither is not expected to play on Sunday against Baltimore.

This will be San Diego’s 11th game of the 2012 NFL season and it would be the seventh game that Gaither will not play in.

San Diego’s offensive line has given up 26 sacks this season which ranks ninth in the NFL in terms of the most sacks allowed.

While Baltimore ranks 23rd with 19 team sacks, Terrell Suggs missed six games this season.  Suggs was the 2011 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and he ranked fifth in the NFL with 14 sacks last season.

Former San Diego left tackle Marcus McNeill held out on San Diego in 2010 and missed five games because of a contract dispute.

McNeill got a six year deal worth $48.9 million prior to his 2010 season debut against the St. Louis Rams.

McNeill was placed on injured reserve last season after he started nine games.  It would be a shame for San Diego if history is repeating itself.

San Diego’s offensive line solved their issues in the last five games of the 2011 season.  However, the issues have resurfaced which has not been a recipe for success.
