The San Diego Chargers signed former Denver Broncos punt return man/wide receiver Eddie Royal to a three year deal worth $13.5 million during the off-season.

Before this season, Royal ranked third among active players in yards per punt return for his career trailing Chicago Bears return man Devin Hester and New England Patriots return man Julian Edelman.

Royal averages 11.1 yards per punt return for his career and was supposed to help a San Diego team improve on their 8.5 yards per punt return last season which ranked 22nd in the NFL.

Royal is averaging a career low 5.3 yards per punt return this season after averaging a career high 16.2 yards per return last season.

Royal will not play in today’s game due to a hamstring injury.  Royal missed two games in a row earlier this season with a hamstring injury as well.

According to Louis Bien of sbnation.com, “Royal is dealing with a hamstring injury that has nagged him for several weeks now.”

This is the third time in five weeks that Royal will not play because of a hamstring injury.

The addition of Royal has made San Diego worse in punt returns because they average 6.1 yards per punt return which ranks 30th in the NFL out of 32 teams.

Royal has been a major disappointment for San Diego this season.  One has to wonder what this means for his future with the team.

Royal’s base salary is $3 million next season and $4.5 million in 2014.  It is possible that San Diego will release Royal after this season is over.
