The Arizona Cardinals may have to bury their head in sand after this lost, but they do have something to cheer about. RB Beanie Wells scored twice in his return to the lineup. I’m not sure Wells was expected to make a big impact, but he was up for the task and that is why he is the Cardinals’ player of the game.

Wells carried the ball 17 times for 48 yards in the loss. LaRod Stephens-Howling has had better games in his absence, but the Cardinals are lacking the short game. Wells is a bigger back that gives the Cardinals more options on first and second down. Stephens-Howling was active in the game against the St. Louis Rams, but the Cardinals seemed to not want to risk further injury to the running back’s ribs. That is a good call considering a new Cardinals’ player seems to go on injured reserve each week.

Keep in mind, Wells is not the player of the the whole game, just the Cardinals side of the ball. Rams’ RB Steven Jackson would be the offensive player of the game and CB Janoris Jenkins would be the defensive player of the game. Jackson might be on the downside of his career, but on Sunday he looked like his younger self. Jenkins just had the game of his life.

Each week it gets harder and harder to pick a player of the game for the Cardinals. Their offense seems to lose the game with some sort of problem every single Sunday. Wells did not have a great game on Sunday, but the Cardinals are happy that he returned to the field and they might get a player that can help them not lose the rest of their games down the stretch.
