Weddle suffered a concussion when he was hit by Baltimore wide receiver Anquan Boldin in the fourth quarter. Donald Butler and Atari Bigby also both suffered groin injuries in yesterday’s loss.
Weddle, Butler and Bigby are first, second and third on San Diego’s roster in tackles. According to Michael Gehlken of nctimes.com, inside linebacker Takeo Spikes said “We lost the meat and potatoes of our defense.”
Weddle was quoted as saying “I got knocked out; I guess I was conscious, but I just don’t know where I was at or what was going on. I came back heading into the locker room. That’s when I realized where I was at.”
Weddle leads San Diego with three interceptions and was tied with Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson and New England Patriots CB Kyle Arrington for the NFL lead in interceptions with seven in 2011.
Corey Liuget, Antonio Garay, Antwan Barnes, Danario Alexander, Darrell Stuckey and Jeromey Clary also suffered injuries. There will be MRI’s today to determine how serious the injuries are for the Chargers’ players.
The injuries to Weddle, Butler and Bigby could be huge, as San Diego is vastly improved this season as a defense compared to last year.
Last season, San Diego allowed 4.4 yards per rushing attempt which ranked 20th in the NFL and allowed 7.9 yards per pass attempt which ranked 28th in the league.
In 2012, the Chargers are allowing only 3.8 yards per rushing attempt this season which ranks sixth in the league while giving up 7.0 yards per pass attempt, which ranks 15th in the NFL.
San Diego needs Weddle, Butler and Bigby to be healthy in order to keep their playoff chances alive.
