NFL Rumors: New England Patriots To Add Jeremy Ebert

The New England Patriots drafted wide receiver Jeremy Ebert out of Northwestern during the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft.  The new draftee was to join a cast of receivers and tight ends that have led the best offense in the NFL.  But he disappointed during training camp and was released during the final round of cuts.  One of this week’s NFL rumors is that Ebert may be returning to the Patriots practice squad.

When Ebert was drafted he was expected to be on the Patriots practice squad when the season started.  At 5 feet and 11 inches in height, he plays a similar role to that of Julian Edelman and Wes Welker.  With the contract problems the Patriots have had with Welker, Ebert was seen, along with Edelman, as an eventual replacement.

After Ebert was released he was signed the practice squad by the Philadelphia Eagles on September 13.  A couple of weeks later they too released the receiver.  Two of the receivers chosen ahead of Ebert were Greg Salas and Deion Branch.  Branch and Salas switched between the active roster and practice squad but now both are gone.  Branch was released and never re-signed and Salas was picked up off waivers by the Eagles.

Rumors began surfacing Tuesday afternoon about Ebert’s return when he tweeted “heading back where it all began”.  With injuries continuing to hamper the Patriots offense including Edelman’s possible concussion which could keep him out Sunday, Ebert’s return is not that unexpected.  It is expected that he will be signed by the Patriots sometime on Wednesday.
