Some interesting news came out earlier today with the release of Jason Babin by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles say they want to make room for younger players and such. Babin had 18 sacks last year and dropped all the way down to five and a half this year. Should the New York Giants try to acquire his services?
The Giant defense is built around pass rushing. Yes, the Giants have Justin Tuck , Osi Umenyiora, Jason Pierre-Paul and Matthias Kiwanuka, who plays outside linebacker as well. Adding Babin could create an overkill situation, but depth helps win championships. How scary would the Giants NASCAR package be with Babin, Tuck, JPP and Osi coming after the passer? Who would you block first? He knows the division and don’t you think he’d be pretty motivated coming into a good situation and playing his former team in week 17?
On the flip side, Babin wouldn’t be in the wide-nine anymore, clearly a technique that he flourished in with the Eagles and the Tennessee Titans. His production has been huge in that system and he clearly feels comfortable in it. He’s going through waivers, so unless he clears–which I don’t expect him to do–he can’t choose where he’s going to go anyway.
The Giants are 24th in the waiver order to claim him. There are certainly teams ahead of the Giants in contention that could use another pass rusher. In the end, they may not get him, but I think it would behoove them to give it a try.
