Jacksonville Jaguars Claim Jason Babin
It was a surprise move for the Eagles to cut the two-time Pro-Bowler following their Monday Night Football loss to the Carolina Panthers but it may be an even bigger surprise that the Jaguars, a team that truly isn’t competing for anything else this season, would be the franchise to scoop up Babin.
So far this season Babin has recorded 5.5 sacks, 26 tackles and two forced fumbles and for that type of effort the Jags are willing to pick up the remaining $1.69 million of his salary for the season. Babin just signed a five-year, $28 million deal with the Eagles prior to the 2011 season, however the Jags are not obligated to pay for the duration of his contract but can if they choose to do so.
For the Jaguars it was a good move because now they have a legitimate pass rusher on their defensive line which is something that they truly didn’t possess before the move. Heading into week 13 of the season the Jaguars are tied with the Oakland Raiders for the fewest sacks recorded by a defense with just 13 in 11 games, an average of 1.18 sacks per contest.
Throughout Babin’s nine-year NFL career the veteran defensive end has recorded 53.5 sacks (highlighted by the 18 which he racked up in his first season in Philadelphia in 2011), 296 tackles and nine forced fumbles.
