NFL Rumors: Michael Coe To Get Opportunity With Miami Dolphins
With a secondary getting torched and the top NFL offense (New England Patriots) on their schedule two times still to come, we see the Miami Dolphins have signed ex-New York Giants cornerback Michael Coe. Word is he will get a chance to play as soon as possible (he is having a bit of an issue with his leg, but he is getting better pretty quickly).
Coe has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the past three seasons with the Giants. He comes from a football family. He has played in 32 NFL games, but has yet to record his first interception.
His skill set makes it a head scratcher that he has yet to pick of a pass. He has good hands, and he can read routes well. His ability to get an interception is hurt by the fact that he does not have great closing speed.
Coe requires safety help on deep routes. He needs to use great preparation and technique to get himself in a position to make a play.
He is a sound tackler and has a skill-set that can produce as a nickel cornerback. It remains to be seen if Coe is a legit starting cornerback, but the Dolphins are an organization that currently has an opportunity for him to show that he can be relied on.
This is a guy who can contribute on special teams as well, but Miami is hoping that would is a nice plus rather than the whole story. They are hoping his real value is as a cornerback because Miami has big off-season considerations at that position. Sean Smith is a free-agent, plus what does Miami want to do with Richard Marshall, Jimmy Wilson, and Nolan Carroll.
Coe does not seem like a guy who can come in and provide a spark against a high-powered offense like the Patriots’ but we will watch that closely. We can expect Tom Brady and the Pats to pick on Wilson this weekend, and if Coe plays and looks lost in the new system, or looks a tad out of position, then we know Brady will pick on him, too.
