Green Bay Packers Injury Updates
While the Green Bay Packers sit in the first NFC playoff Wild Card spot with a record of 7-4, it has not come without some adversity. There have been multiple injuries on both sides of the ball involving key players. While injuries are a part of the game, the amount of injuries the Packers have this season is very familiar to the 2010 season when they still fought through to win the Super Bowl.
The biggest hit has come on defense with Clay Matthews suffering a hamstring injury a few weeks ago which has caused him to miss the last two games and is doubtful for this weekend’s matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The medical staff is going to re-evaluate Matthews on Friday, but head coach Mike McCarthy is not optimistic about Matthews’ chances of playing.
“He wants the opportunity to talk again on Friday,” McCarthy said. “He’s getting close. I think it’ll be a stretch for him to play in the game, but we’ll have him evaluated again on Friday and see how the week of rehab goes.”
The absence of Matthews will be huge, especially this week as the Packers will face arguably the best running back in the league in Adrian Peterson. The defensive line struggled last weekend, allowing almost 150 yards rushing with an average of five yards per carry. Missing players like Matthews, Nick Perry and Desmond Bishop really came to light last weekend.
To make matters worse for Green Bay’s defensive line, they will most likely be without defensive end C.J. Wilson who is one of the team’s best run stoppers.
On offense, the injury report is not as bad. Wide receiver Greg Jennings is listed as questionable, but he is most likely to play this weekend. Left tackle Marshall Newhouse was also added to the injury report this week following a wrist injury, but coach McCarthy insists that Newhouse will be ready to go this Sunday.
As for tackle Derek Sherrod, he was unable to come off the physically unable to perform list which means he will be out for the rest of the season. Also, running back Cedric Benson, who was placed on injured reserved after Week 5, was unable to return to practice this week even though he was eligible to return.
