Numerous outlets are reporting that Jovan Belcher (pictued in the middle #59) killed his girlfriend at the couple’s home then drove to the Kansas City Chiefs practice facility and killed himself. Reports suggest that team’s head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli were present when Belcher shot himself. Both Crennel and Pioli apparently confronted Belcher in the parking lot before he pulled the trigger. Belcher and his deceased girlfriend recently had a child.

Belcher came to the Chiefs as an undrafted rookie in 2009 out of Maine and moved into a starting role at inside linebacker the past three seasons. Last week, he didn’t play against the Denver Broncos. But until then, he has 38 tackles. His best season was last year when he had 87 tackles. According to an article on the team’s website from November 21st, Belcher was very gracious about his time in the NFL. He even had a hint of religion thanking God for his assent into the NFL.

Details about this story are beginning to unfold. There’s been no announcement from the team or the status of tomorrow’s game with the Carolina Panthers in Kansas City. We are expecting announcements from the team and league later today. Roger Goodell will have a very difficult decision on his hands about playing this game tomorrow or postponing it.

While details are still very sketch at this time, these types of tragedies are cutting a deeper mark on the health of players off the field. We will provide more details on this story as these become available.
