New York Jets Pull Mark Sanchez for Greg McElroy in Second Half of Week 13 Game

The impossible has happened for the New York Jets.

Midway through the third quarter of their Week 13 game against the Arizona Cardinals, the Jets mercifully took the football out of the hands of Mark Sanchez and replaced it with a clipboard.

Active for the first time in his career, 24-year-old second-year quarterback Greg McElroy (above ) made his NFL debut a memorable one, driving down the field and throwing the go-ahead touchdown pass on his first drive.

The Jets didn’t ask him to do too much after that, and the Jets went on to win the game 7-6.

Sanchez had been booed all game long, from the coin flip to his final snap, and it’s hard to say he didn’t deserve it. He completed 10 of his 21 passes for just 97 yards with three interceptions, two to former Jet Kerry Rhodes.

Rex Ryan finally pulled the plug after the Sanchez-led offense couldn’t muster a single point. McElroy entered the game with 4:48 left in the third quarter and proceeded to orchestrate a 10-play 69-yard touchdown drive.

After that, Sanchez spent the rest of the game in a baseball cap on the sidelines, standing next to the inactive Tim Tebow for much of the time. The Jets’ quarterback situation is as murky as can be now.

There’s no telling if this midgame benching will be permanent for Sanchez and the Jets. You can bet it’ll be a hot topic of conversation all week long, and probably a lot longer than that.

It’s curious that the Jets finally decided enough is enough the one week that Tebow was not in uniform, but Jets fans at MetLife Stadium were more than happy to greet Greg McElroy with thunderous applause.

Just another day in Jets land.
