New York Jets: Defense should dominate today

Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets look to bounce back from their awful loss on Thanksgiving when they host the Arizona Cardinals today at 1:00 pm ET.  The Jets are only 2-4 at home this season at MetLife Stadium with three of those loses being by more than 21 points.  The Cardinals have only won once on the road this year so something has to give.

The defense should have a big game today against rookie quarterback Ryan Lindley.  Lindley was drafted in the sixth round of this year’s NFL Draft out of San Diego State.  He made his first career start last week in a 31-17 loss to the St. Louis RamsHe completed 31-of-52 passes for 312 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions.  He also played in the team’s 23-19 loss to the Atlanta Falcons where he completed 9-of-20 passes for 64 yards with no touchdowns or picks.

It has been well documented how the Jets defense has struggled this season but Rex Ryan is usually good at fooling rookie quarterbacks.  The Jets don’t have a big time pass rusher on the roster so Ryan has to scheme effectively for the defense to work well.

Ryan’s defense was able to shut down Andrew Luck earlier this year in one of their home victories.  Luck completed 22-of-44 passes for 280 yards with two interceptions in the Jets 35-9 victory over the Indianapolis Colts back in October.  The Jets also showed an ability to get to the quarterback that day as they sacked Luck four times.

Luck’s 50% completion percentage against the Jets is his second lowest output of the season.  The only game he had a worst completion percentage was against the Jacksonville Jaguars in a loss in September.  He connected on 47.8% of his pass attempts in that game.  He also put up a quarterback rating of 40.4 against the Jets which is also his second lowest of the year.  The only game he has a lower rating was his first professional game against the Chicago Bears when he posted a 39.2 rating.

The Jets list only three defensive players on the active roster as inactive today.  They are Aaron Berry, Damon Harrison and Ricky Sapp.  Some notable players not dressing for the Cardinals are Kevin Kolb, Andre Roberts and Todd Heap.
