Sunday Stats: Dolphins vs Patriots

By Craig Ballard

Gameday! You know we do Sunday Stats every week for the Miami Dolphins. This week they face the New England Patriots (for a game preview CLICK HERE). Let’s take a look…

This is the first meeting of these two in 2012 (for article on Miami vs AFC East CLICK HERE).

Tom Brady is 14-6 in his career vs the Dolphins. In games played in Miami he is 5-5 (0-3 in December, but those games were way back in 2004, 2006, and the most recent one was 2009). In games played in Miami, Tom Terrific has 22 touchdown passes and just 11 interceptions. His last four trips to Miami have produced a 3-1 record with a QB rating north of 101.0 all four times.

Brady is just 0.4 points behind Aaron Rodgers for the best QB rating in the NFL.

In the Patriots 8 wins, Brady has 20 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Wow. Brady is 4-0 vs the AFC East this season, and has 10 touchdowns with zero interceptions in the division.

Ryan Tannehill is 0-2 vs the AFC East so far (article on Tannehill vs AFC East is HERE). Miami did win the 2nd New York Jets meeting, but Tanny threw just 5 passes in that game before leaving in the first quarter with a knee/quad issue. He has one touchdown and three interceptions vs the division.

LB Jerod Mayo enters week 13 as the NFL leader in tackles with 112.

With 61 more rushing yards Stevan Ridley will get to 1,000 for the season. He averages 85 rushing yards per game (No. 7 in NFL).

Dolphins RB Reggie Bush is giving the team an average of 60 rush yards per game (No. 23 in the NFL).

New England is a gaudy +24 for turnover ratio. The next highest team in the NFL is the Chicago Bears at +13. Wow.

Miami has the 2nd best punt unit in the AFC. New England has the 2nd worst.

Rob Gronkowski is 4-0 vs Miami, but he will miss this game. He averages 67.5 rec yards. Aaron Hernandez is 3-0 vs Miami and he averages 56 rec yards per game vs Miami.

The Pats have 113 more first downs than the ‘Phins. Wow.

The Dolphins are in the top 10 for sacks (29), while the Patriots are in the bottom 10 (23).

Only one team has yielded fewer sacks than the Pats (15). The ‘Phins have allowed 22 sacks (tied for 22nd).

There are only six defenses that are better on third down than Miami. There are only two defenses worse on 3rd down than New England.

Miami has made 14 field goals (only three teams have made less).

The Dolphins average 19 points per game (only six teams are worse). The Patriots average 37 points per game (best in NFL).

The Patriots are the only team to not yield a TD when their opponents are on defense or special teams.

Ex-Dolphins Wes Welker is 7-2 as a Patriot vs Miami. He averages a whopping 109 receiving yards per game vs his former team. In his career he has 4 touchdowns vs Miami.

Dan Marino was 17-13 vs the Patriots (article on why I consider Marino the best QB ever is HERE). Jay Fielder was 4-5. Chad Henne was 1-4.
