To fans who are in the middle of a losing season, it’s not about what you are doing. It’s about what you are going to do. Trading away the best player on the team tells the fans that your team is rebuilding and it’s going to take a while.
This season, there has been a huge outcry from fans and Marcus Fitzgerald to trade Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald. I am here to tell you that there will never be a good time to trade the best player in franchise history. Fitzgerald may be too old to build a franchise around, but the Cardinals could be one player away from being a playoff team. The player is a healthy quarterback. That healthy quarterback is Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick.
Vick brings an entirely new dynamic to a team that needs a play maker. QB Kevin Kolb is good enough to be a starter in this league. He proved that early in the season, but Vick is a game changer. He would double the Cardinals’ playbook. Vick is a quarterback Fitzgerald needs and deserves as he rides the back end of his career into the Hall of Fame.
It’s no secret that the Cardinals have been decimated by injuries this season, especially on offense. Two quarterbacks have missed time, two running backs have been placed on IR and two offensive linemen are out or have missed the entire season. Fitzgerald is in the middle of his worst season as a pro and in most cases it’s hard to not blame the player at all, but in this case, fans should not place any of Fitzgerald’s lack of production on him.
Fitzgerald is not on pace to reach 1,000 yards for just the second time in his career while playing 16 games. His first time was his rookie season and his second time he did not play in all 16 games, so that does not count. Fitzgerald is one of the nicest guys in the NFL. He deserves better, but the Cardinals would be crazy to trade him away.
