Two Defensive Players To Watch For The New York Giants Tonight

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

As the New York Giants and Washington Redskins prepare to meet tonight on Monday Night Football, the Giants got hit with injuries over the weekend with Kenny Phillips and Jason Pierre-Paul. Phillips will probably be out for tonight’s game (he’s listed as doubtful), but JPP is listed as questionable with a back issue. Other players are going to have to step up tonight, and two of them may be Tyler Sash and Matthias Kiwanuka.

Sash’s number may be called upon a lot if the Giants want to use a three safety look like they did last week. The Redskins’ receiving corps isn’t as good as the Green Bay Packers, however, the look seemed to be effective. When Phillips left last week’s game early due to injury, Tyler Sash came in when the defensive starters were still in. It appears that Sash is ahead of Will Hill on the depth chart. To me, I think Hill may be the better option, however, Hill may be a little rusty coming off suspension.

If Jason Pierre-Paul is limited today or misses the game, Osi Umenyiora will start for him, but expect to see a lot of Kiwanuka at end. Kiwanuka is probably a better run defender than Osi is. The Redskins read option game is a vital part of what they do. Osi has struggled in run support throughout his career so its very possible that Kiwanuka may get some more time then you may think tonight at the defensive end spot.

Two unheralded defensive players may help the Giants get a needed win tonight. If they win this game, it puts them in a great position to win the division. If they don’t, the division may be up for grabs.
