While the New England Patriots have much to celebrate as they just clinched the AFC East on Sunday, they did lose another piece of their puzzle for the season when it was just announced that wide receiver, punt returner and proverbial jack of trades Julian Edelman has broken his foot and likely will need season-ending surgery.
Edelman will be hard to replace since he does so much for New England and this season he has had 17 returns with a 15.5 yards-per-return average and a punt return for a touchdown which ranks second in the NFL. As a wide receiver, he has had 21 catches for 235 yards and two touchdowns, which are excellent numbers considering he’s Tom Brady‘s fourth wide receiver. Plus, there the two playmaking tight ends that were ahead of him in the way of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.
Replacing Edelman will be former Patriots wide receiver, Donte’ Stallworth, son of Hall of Famer John Stallworth. The good news for the Patriots is that Stallworth knows the offense fairly well, which is better than some random wide receiver who’s unfamiliar with the Patriots’ system and philosophies, but this is just my take. What do you think? Let me know!
