2013 NFL Draft: Who Should Kansas City Chiefs Consider With No. 1 Pick?

By Andy Schmidt

We sit just four weeks away from the end of the 2012 NFL season and thoughts will soon turn to the 2013 NFL Draft for most of the teams in the league, including the one that likely will have the No. 1 pick, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs sit at 2-10 as Week 14 gets underway and if things continue this way, we will be putting the Chiefs on the clock very shortly. The question becomes now: Who should the Chiefs consider drafting with the top pick?

I think Kansas City should be looking at the quarterback position where the battle between Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn isn’t winning any games or fans over right now. It would be a huge risk but I think the Chiefs should just take USC Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley if they do end up with the first pick. I understand that the last USC quarterback to come out with such high regard, Mark Sanchez, hasn’t worked out very well but I believe Barkley is a better quarterback than Sanchez and will fare better in the NFL.

I’m sure it will be a long few months in Kansas City figuring out how to make this decision but if the Chiefs are thinking about the future and with a star at running back in Jamaal Charles and wide receiver in Dwayne Bowe, the choice is Barkley. There will definitely be other names floating about between now and then and someone could jump up the big board before then but for now, it is Barkley at No. 1.
