Cardiac St. Louis Rams Win in Last Moments Yet Again
There was no way of beating around the bush when it came to discussing the importance of the St. Louis Rams‘ game on the road against the Buffalo Bills in week 14. A win kept the team’s playoff hopes alive and well whereas a loss completely extinguished any possibility of the postseason involving the Rams. As expected, the team was without wide receiver Danny Amendola who was inactive due to a nagging foot injury, but the club pulled together despite his absence to persevere.
While the offense was stuck in the mud for much of the afternoon, the feisty Rams still find away to hang around and remain competitive with the Bills. There was very little to be happy about at the end of the first half with the team scoring zero points despite having tremendous field position. Still that battle of the field position allowed them to hang tough and only be down by two field goals at the break.
Speaking of field position, one player who doesn’t get nearly enough recognition for this Rams team is young rookie punter Johnny Hekker. His kicks shifted the game on several occasions as he pinned the Bills deep numerous times, twice inside of their own 20-yard line.
Even though quarterback Sam Bradford had difficulties early trying to find open receivers, he fought through and eventually found a rapport with Brandon Gibson. Many figured that both he and Chris Givens would be vying for the top spot with Amendola sidelined and Gibson was the one who came though in the clutch. On the team’s final drive which began at their own 16-yard line, Gibson made two crucial grabs including the game-winning touchdown.
It hasn’t always been easy to watch, but this Rams team is becoming quite a story. Their late-game heroics have been incredibly entertaining even though the consistency isn’t always there on either side of the ball. What stands out most about this team is that they have a knack for making the timely stops defensively and conversions offensively to get victories. For a team that is the youngest in the NFL, that is quite a feat for Head Coach Jeff Fisher to have achieved in just his first year at the helm.
