End Of Season Cannot Come Soon Enough For Jacksonville Jaguars
Sunday’s 17-10 loss at home to the New York Jets was just the latest chapter in the increasingly frustrating 2012 campaign that began with so much hope, but has long since fallen off of the cliff.
We now know that the Jaguars offensive woes do not stem from just the quarterback position, although neither Blaine Gabbert nor Chad Henne has played anywhere close to the level you would expect from a franchise quarterback. Anybody who has actually sat down and watched the last two games cannot claim that Henne gives the Jaguars a better chance to win football games. While Henne seems more willing to push the ball down the field, he has only completed 51.6% of his passes to Gabbert’s 58.3% and he has a 76.2 quarterback rating while Gabbert finished with a 77.4.
At this point the Jaguars cannot feel comfortable with either as their quarterback in 2013, but given the perceived lack of elite talent at the position in the upcoming NFL Draft it may be that they end up as the Jaguars only options under center next year.
On the other side of the ball, the Jaguars defense may be the most disappointing unit in the league this season.
Only one season after finishing in the top 10 in total defense, the Jaguars defense finds itself next to last in the league and seemingly cannot stop anybody from running the ball. The Jets took over the game yesterday when they took the ball out of Mark Sanchez’s hands and went run heavy in the second half.
Even though the Jets made it painfully obvious that they were going to run the ball, they still managed to rack up 166 yards on the ground a week after allowing the Buffalo Bills to churn out 232 rushing yards in a poor weather game that made running the ball a necessity.
The defensive line that Jaguars general manager Gene Smith has spent so many draft picks on not only cannot hold the line of scrimmage against the run, but could not find their way to the opposing quarterback with a road map. Through 13 games, the Jaguars have only managed a league worst 14 sacks.
At this point it is obvious that Smith has worked his way out of a job as he has systematically destroyed this roster in his four years at the helm. For Jaguars fans, the end to this season and Smith’s tenure cannot come fast enough.
