Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers…A Battle of Words
Rounds are being fired off (from people’s mouths) from this Sunday’s match-up between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. Brandon Marshall, Jermichael Finley, Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher are having a jolly time running off their mouths.
OK, I have to admit, all of this is comical to me. I am glad that these guys are having some fun with the rivalry. Pandering to the fans is always a good idea. At the same time, does anyone really think Marshall’s declaration that he doesn’t like the Packers makes one bit of difference come Sunday?
As a fan of football (and yes the Bears), I want my team to dislike its opponent every week. This shouldn’t be a one-time thing. Quite frankly, as much as I love Urlacher, I was really disappointed when he shook former teammate and current Houston Texan Danieal Manning‘s hand after an interception. While I appreciate sportsmanship, I really don’t like the notion that your congratulating the opposing team after a play that damages your chances of winning.
What has been lost in all the meatballing, there’s a game to be played Sunday at Soldier Field. The Bears are fighting for their postseason lives, while the Packers seem to have found their groove. I have a very bad feeling about this game and think Aaron Rodgers will have his Tom Brady moment of just tossing TD passes all over the field. And while many Bears fans tell me I need to have more faith, if anyone actually believes that ridiculous notion, the Bears would would be 19-0 every year if you took everyone’s collective faith. So would the Philadelphia Eagles. Games are won and lost on the field, not in people’s heads or thoughts. Sorry to disappoint many of you, but it is the truth.
With all the above being said, I will be in my Bears garb and screaming at the television set like I do every Sunday. I really hope that my “faith” in a loss is wrong, but as a realist, I just don’t see the Bears winning this game. But if this game was won off the field, I believe the Bears have won the trash-talking battle. So I have that going for me.
