New York Giants Safety Stevie Brown Deserves a Shot at the Pro Bowl
New York Giants’ S Stevie Brown has done a lot of good things since taking over for an injured S Kenny Phillips. However, he wasn’t being recognized for it by the NFL. The NFL didn’t have Brown’s name on the ballot to be voted into the Pro Bowl. That has changed.
Brown’s name has been added to the ballot, deservedly so. Brown is second in the league in interceptions with seven, only behind Chicago Bears’ CB Tim Jennings. Brown also have three fumble recoveries as well, so he has been a machine when it comes to causing turnovers.
Brown has done all of this without the benefit of playing in the first four games. He should easily be voted to play in the Pro Bowl. What safety in the NFC is putting up the numbers like he is so far this season? No one really.
Earlier this season, LB Michael Boley was the Giants’ interception machine, as he caught an interception in each of the first three games. He hasn’t caught a pick since, and rightfully so. He is a linebacker, so his job isn’t to catch interceptions.
Brown has done his job and has done it much better than anyone has expected. Brown has been sneaky back there, reading the quarterback’s eyes and flying to the ball when it’s in the air. While Brown has been more than exceptional as the statistics suggests, some people will look to point to things to make the argument he shouldn’t be a Pro Bowler.
Brown hasn’t necessarily shown a ton of consistency when it comes to interceptions. He caught two interceptions each against the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints. Other than those three games alone, he only has one interception. He’s also had some communication breakdown with corners, resulting in big plays given up.
Those three games where Brown dominated were won mostly because of Brown. Brown’s performance against the Browns helped the Giants take the lead after trailing 14-0 to start the game. The Giants went up 23-0 against the Cowboys because of the turnovers the Giants created, and Brown was a big part of that.
Brown also had the interception that sealed the game for the Giants against the Cowboys. He has been a difference maker, and a big reason why Giants’ fans want to see the three-safety look again. Brown should be rewarded with a trip to Honolulu.
