The Atlanta Falcons need to shake things up offensively and the best way to do that is to start Jacquizz Rodgers over Michael Turner this Sunday.
The Falcons starting running back may not be on the injury report but I do not believe Turner is completely healthy, having suffered a groin injury a few games ago. If my theory is true, this is all the more reason to start Rodgers this Sunday against the New York Giants.
Turner just has not been able to get it going since Mike Nolan took over Atlanta’s offense and honestly, their style of play suits Rodgers more than it does Turner, who should be familiar with this situation. It was only a few years ago that Michael Turner left the San Diego Chargers after playing behind the great LaDainian Tomlinson.
Turner was able to blossom into one of the NFL’s top running backs and allow Atlanta to have one of the best rushing attacks as well. Thanks to a change in scheme, Turner finds himself in the same situation again but I do not believe he should be traded.
The Falcons still need his bruising style of play as they lack the physicality they once possessed on offense but if the Falcons plan to make a run they would be better served with Rodgers starting and getting the bulk of the carries and catches.
Turner hits the hole hard and builds up steam as he goes but Rodgers hits the hole faster and can be in the end zone before the opposing teams’ secondary can adjust. Not only that, Rodgers would make a better option for Matt Ryan when the pocket collapses and he needs someone to throw to. Atlanta should still use Turner in the red zone and to help Atlanta kill the clock when necessary but Rodgers’ game package needs to increase and he needs to become the main guy. It is the best solution for a rushing attack that is not as potent as it used to be.
