NFL Rumors: New York Jets to Start QB Greg McElroy the Rest of the Season?
In the immediate wake of their playoff hopes going up in smoke Monday night, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan was noncommittal about who would be the Jets’ starting quarterback for the rest of the season.
However, there are now rumblings out of Jets camp that Ryan is getting set to name third-stringer Greg McElroy as his starting quarterback the rest of the way, in what could be the end of the Mark Sanchez era in New York.
The Jets did everything they could to salvage Sanchez’s Jets career, but the 26-year-old fourth-year starter simply hasn’t gotten it done, and his debacle of a game Monday night appears to have been the last straw.
Ryan is expected to announce Tuesday afternoon that the 24-year-old McElroy will get the starting nod in the Jets’ final two games, bypassing second-string quarterback Tim Tebow, who likely will remain the backup.
Tebow got an entire series at quarterback for the first time this season Monday, and went 0 for 1 with a sack before heading back to the sidelines for the rest of the game, where McElroy stood, inactive and in street clothes.
McElroy’s only NFL experience was in Week 13, in which he replaced an ineffective Sanchez in the third quarter of a one-score game, and he threw the eventual game-winning touchdown pass on his first career drive.
The Jets clearly don’t think Tim Tebow is the answer, which begs the question of why they ever acquired him in the first place. If they won’t start him now, it’s obvious that he is not in the future plans for 2013 and beyond.
The ugly truth is that the Jets had a starting quarterback in Sanchez who was unfit to start in the NFL, a backup in Tebow who they deemed even less of a fit, and a third-stringer in McElroy who is a complete unknown.
Now, the Jets will see what they have in McElroy, at least for two weeks. Where was this move a month ago?
