NFL Rumors: Big Changes Coming for Kansas City Chiefs Coaching Staff

One interesting thing about living in the heart of America is I get to be front row center for all the drama that is the Kansas City Chiefs football team. And in the past few days things have really heated up on the rumor front about the future of head coach Romeo Crennel and General Manager Scott Pioli. What started as Internet discussion and text messages really seems to have grown legs, and while it’s not been confirmed by the Chiefs, it certainly sounds as if owner Clark Hunt is going to play out the string of the next two games and then let Crennel and/or Pioli go.

This all got legs for me two days ago when I read a post on a popular Chiefs forum, ChiefsPlanet. At first it sounded a little like someone who was certainly informed. That post and the story was taken on by the popular Chiefs fan group Save our Chiefs @saveourchiefs on Twitter, and it’s really sounding more and more like it’s true. These are groups that are close to this situation and know of what they speak. They have pieced together a very logical timeline that leads to a future that doesn’t include Pioli and Crennel.

I decided to reach out to the people I know who are affiliated with either the team or the local media and it was almost unanimous that the relationship between Pioli and Hunt is in bad shape. Like Titanic after the iceberg bad shape.

Now please don’t misunderstand me. I know a couple of former players and media types and that’s who I reached out to in confidence. I’m sure the folks at ChiefsPlanet and SaveOurChiefs are far more connected than I am. But if you believe the signs, it’s only a matter of when not if this is all going down, and continuity and opportunities are the only reason Hunt hasn’t cleaned house already. Read into that what you will, but it’s not out of the question that a change this late could inspire the team to a couple of pointless wins, hurting their draft stock and Hunt wants to give the new regime a clean slate. Scary to think an owner would endorse a philosophy, but it’s what is out there and it makes sense.

The writing has been on the wall for this team for some time, but it really sounds as if Chiefs fans are going to get what they want. I have a lot of friends who root for the Chiefs and I hope for their sake Hunt is handling all this correctly and he times it properly to get that team in the best position to win, because I really think this is a team primed for a quick turnaround.
