NFL Rumors: Will Brandon Taylor start on Sunday?
San Diego gave up a 2012 sixth round pick to move up five spots in the draft and selected Taylor.
According to Michael Gehlken of nctimes.com, “Brandon Taylor is expected to start Sunday against the Jets, sources said Wednesday.” If Taylor starts against the New York Jets, it would be his first start in the NFL.
Strong safeties are important when it comes to slowing down the run game. San Diego lost former Green Bay Packers SS Atari Bigby for the season due to injury. Bigby started 11 games and was third on the team in tackles.
San Diego allows 3.8 yards per rushing attempt which ranks fifth in fewest yards allowed per attempt. Taylor was on the field for 16 plays against the Carolina Panthers last Sunday.
Taylor said “If I do start, I’ll be very excited. I would just have to control my emotions because I’d be so anxious to make a play. I’ve just got to calm down, play my assignment and react to my keys.”
This would be a huge opportunity for Taylor to prove himself heading into the off-season. Corey Lynch replaced Bigby for the last three games, but Lynch’s contract is up after this season and Bigby has one year left on his deal.
The 22 year old Taylor could be San Diego’s future at SS and Sunday could be a step in the right direction for him.
