NFL Rumors: Would Michael Vick Really be an Option for New York Jets?
The NFL rumors are starting to surround the New York Jets and the possibility that Michael Vick might be a target of the team this offseason to replace the failed experiment that was Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.
This is pure speculation right now and nobody knows who the general manager and head coach will be with the Jets next season. Is it Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum? At this point it is doubtful. Without knowing who will be heading the team next season how can there be speculation as to who the quarterback will be?
However, let’s take a look at Vick and the Jets. Vick lost his starting job to Nick Foles after suffering a concussion and it doesn’t appear he will be getting his job back. There is a reason for that. Vick couldn’t get the job done with the Philadelphia Eagles despite having a better surrounding cast than Sanchez had with the Jets.
Vick is used goods at this point with an injury history longer than his list of accomplishments. At this point he would be another sideshow to the circus that the Jets have become. Vick is not the same player and has become frighteningly turnover prone. If Jets fans bemoan the turnovers Sanchez makes, how would they feel with Vick under center?
The Jets best option might be trying to trade for Matt Flynn or sign Alex Smith while drafting a young quarterback like Mike Glennon out of North Carolina State or, Tyler Bray of Tennessee if he declares. I don’t see Geno Smith or Matt Barkley being good fits for the Jets.
The Jets biggest hurdle will be trading Mark Sanchez and his $8.25 million guaranteed contract not in finding someone to replace him. The question is, do the Jets really feel that the future of their franchise lies in a quarterback who will be 33-years-old who is one hit away from his career being in jeopardy?
The Jets would be wise to stay away from Vick at this point in his career and instead focus on strengthening their offensive line and revamp their linebacker corps while drafting a young quarterback and sign a capable veteran who can hold down the fort until their rookie is ready, similar to what the New York Giants did with Kurt Warner and Eli Manning in 2004.
