The New York Giants have had a lot of injuries in their backfield. Ahmad Bradshaw can’t stay healthy through a 16 game season. Andre Brown broke out this year but broke his fibula and is out. David Wilson is a rookie, so they can’t be too sure what they have in him just yet. The Giants should probably add another running back in free agency. One guy who they could target is Rashard Mendenhall.
Mendenhall is probably not going to be with the Pittsburgh Steelers next year. He’s been suspended for a game this season and has missed time with injuries. He could be a perfect buy low candidate for the Giants in the off-season to give them some extra depth at the position.
He’s only 25 years old and when he has played a full season, he’s rushed for at least 900 yards and rushed for over 1,100 yards twice. He’s a former first round pick. He’s clearly got some ability.
He could be a lot like Martellus Bennett this year. Sign a guy with a lot of upside to a one year deal and give him a shot and see what happens. There is no such thing as a bad one year deal. If he doesn’t play well or gets hurt, you just let him go.
The Giants could use some additional depth next year in the backfield. Mendenhall may not even be let go by Pittsburgh, however, if he is, and if he can be had for a cheap price tag, there’s no reason why the Giants shouldn’t think about acquiring him.
