Calvin Johnson Could Break These 12 NFL Records Over His Career
NFL Records Calvin Johnson Will Break
On Saturday December 22nd 2012, Calvin Johnson set a new NFL record. The Detroit Lions receiver now holds the record for most receiving yards in a single season with 1892. Johnson broke a 17 year old mark set by longtime San Francisco 49ers receiver Jerry Rice. The 49ers receiver congratulated Calvin with a message shown at Ford Field after the record was broken. During the week, Rice said he was happy for Calvin on his record pace. Rice also told the media that he has over 40 records and doesn’t mind giving up one of them.
The bad news for Rice is Calvin is going to break more of his records along his NFL career. Johnson, a six year NFL player, is on pace to surpass many receiving records in the NFL and the Lions organization. Records ranging from single season, single game to career all have a chance of falling to the 6’5” receiver.
On Saturday night alone, Calvin broke over five records including the single season yards, most games in a season with more than 100 yards and most consecutive games with 100 or more receiving yards. Sunday night’s game saw Calvin catch 11 passes for 225 yards. The game was his fourth 200 plus receiving yards game, which puts him one away from tying a record.
Here are Calvin’s career stats through Week 16 of the 2012 season:
2007: 48 receptions, 756 yards, 4 touchdowns
2008: 78 receptions, 1331 yards, 12 touchdowns
2009: 67 receptions, 984 yards, 5 touchdowns
2010: 77 receptions, 1120 yards, 12 touchdowns
2011: 96 receptions, 1681 yards, 16 touchdowns
2012: 117 receptions, 1892 yards, 5 touchdowns
Here is a look at some of the records Calvin could break in his career.
1. Receiving Yards in a Career
Perhaps the biggest record Calvin Johnson will chase is Jerry Rice’s career receiving yards totals. Through his 21 season, Rice put up 22,895 yards. This is almost 7,000 more yards than second place holder Terrell Owens (15,934). Calvin has 7764 yards in his six year career and would likely need to play at least 12 more seasons to hit the mark. It could be a long shot, but it is possible with the way Megatron is playing the game today. Herman Moore holds the Detroit Lions franchise record with 9174 yards, which Calvin could pass in the 2013 season.
2. Games With 10 Receptions
Jerry Rice is one of several receivers who hold the record of most games with 10 or more receptions. The current record of 17 is in danger with Calvin Johnson the primary target in the Detroit Lions pass happy offense. Saturday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons was the sixth game of the 2012 season where Calvin has caught at least 10 passes. In his six year career, Calvin has nine games with 10 or more catches.
3. Seasons of 1000 Receiving Yards
Jerry Rice holds the record for most NFL seasons with at least 1000 receiving yards. Over his 21 year career, Rice had 1,000 yards fourteen times. In four of his six seasons, Calvin Johnson now has more than 1000 yards. Johnson would need to pass 1000 yards in ten more seasons to tie Rice’s record.
4. Seasons of 1500 Receiving Yards
Jerry Rice passed the 1500 mark twice in his 21 year NFL career. Calvin Johnson is half way to tying the record as he now has had 1600 receiving yards in back to back seasons. If the pass happy trend of the Detroit Lions continues, Johnson should pass the record in three years.
5. Games of 50 Receiving Yards
Jerry Rice was the primary receiver on the teams he played for in most of his 21 seasons. Rice posted at least 50 receiving yards in 198 games throughout his career. In six seasons, Calvin Johnson has passed the 50 yard mark in 66 NFL games. It looks like Johnson has a chance at passing this mark.
6. Games With 100 Receiving Yards
Jerry Rice only had 76 games with 100 or more receiving yards. In six seasons, Calvin Johnson is almost half way to Rice’s mark. Calvin has 100 or more receiving yards in 32 career NFL games.
7. Games With 150 Receiving Yards
It’s not surprising that Jerry Rice holds the record with 30 NFL games with 150 or more receiving yards. Calvin Johnson has nine games with 150 or more yards. However, Calvin has four games in the 2012 season with 150 or more yards. If he can keep up this pace, he could easily pass the mark of 30 set by Rice.
8. Games With 200 Receiving Yarads
Surprisingly enough, there is a receiving record not held by Jerry Rice. The record for most games with 200 or more receiving is held by Lance Alworth. The long time San Diego Chargers receiver had five games with 200 plus yards. Calvin Johnson had 225 yards in Saturday night’s game, giving him four in his career.
9. Games With 100 Receiving Yards in a Season
Calvin Johnson tied this record on Saturday night’s matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. The record of 11 belongs to Calvin and Michael Irvin. If Calvin has 100 yards in next week’s home game against the Chicago Bears, it will be another record for Megatron.
10. Games With 150 Yards in a Season
Another record that Calvin Johnson could surpass is five games with 150 or more yards in a season. The record is currently shared by Tim Brown, Roy Green and Jerry Rice. If Megatron has 150 yards in week 17, he will join this list of receivers.
11. Games With 200 Receving Yards in a Season
Another record Calvin Johnson can surpass in Week 17 is most games with 200 or more receiving yards in a season. The record is currently held by Charley Hennigan with three.
12. Consecutive Games With 200 Yards
After putting up 225 yards in Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, Calvin now has an outside shot at this small NFL record. However, the previous matchup with the Chicago Bears was one of only two games that Calvin Johnson didn’t have at least 50 yards during the 2012 season.
