New York Jets: Historic Offensive Futility
The New York Jets gave their fans another uninspiring offensive performance in their 27-17 loss to the San Diego Chargers at MetLife Stadium yesterday. The Jets actually led this game 14-10 at halftime but only got a field goal in the fourth quarter to suffer their fifth home loss of the year. The team dropped to 6-9 on the season.
The Jets offensive line was historically bad as they gave up 11 sacks, which tied for the most in Jets history. The Jets couldn’t keep first-time starter Greg McElroy upright to give him any chance at success. All the sacks couldn’t be blamed entirely on the offensive line as McElroy looked unsure of himself in his reads. McElroy did throw one pick and had one fumble.
McElroy will get the start next Sunday at Buffalo as the team takes on the Buffalo Bills. We learned that Tim Tebow no longer wants to play in the Wildcat package so he did not appear in the game yesterday. He was disappointed that he was passed over for the start in place of Mark Sanchez.
The Tebow situation really shows how bad the team has been run this season. The Jets should never have traded for him but Tebow does have value. He could have been used in short-yardage and goal line situations but the Jets never put him in that role.
Offensively, it appears the Jets have no idea what to do on offense. Despite Tebow being disappointed in the situation, how can he ask out of his package? He has this persona as a very good teammate and a leader in the locker room. Why Rex Ryan would even make him active if he’s not going to play is also mind numbing. Ryan could not answer this question after the game.
The only silver lining is there are only nine teams in the NFL with a worse record than the Jets. They will have a top fifteen pick in next April’s NFL Draft to start to shore up areas. The real question is who is going to make that pick or which coaching staff will be around to develop the players? There are rumors that the Jets are already looking at potential general managers.
