The New York Giants are already talking about next year in certain respects. Head coach Tom Coughlin is talking about how they need to play for pride. Osi Umenyiora is talking about how if the Giants make changes, they need to be wholesale changes. But is that truly the answer?
Well in some respects they may need to. The game on Sunday will be the last time this entire starting eleven is together. For the Giants, that’s probably a good idea. On defense, I expect either Justin Tuck or Osi Umenyiora to be gone, maybe even both.
With the other holes the Giants have to fill, plus their own players they have to sign, one or the other needs to go. They have Jason Pierre-Paul and Matthias Kiwanuka at that position. I still believe in Adewale Ojomo’s potential if they give him a chance. Granted he only played pre-season, but he could get a chance, and the Giants develop pass rushers. Chris Canty hasn’t played as well as last year and neither has Linval Joseph. Look for them to add a defensive tackle as well.
The Giants need to get at least one more linebacker, maybe even two. Michael Boley is a solid player. Chase Blackburn has been the man in the middle, however, he isn’t the answer moving forward in the middle. He’s been called the heart and soul of the defense, however, they should look to improve in that spot. The young linebackers like Jacquain Williams and Mark Herzlich haven’t panned out as well this year. The trade for Keith Rivers has been okay, however, he’s been injury prone.
The secondary is the tricky spot. Either Stevie Brown or Kenny Phillips is gone. I’m going to make the guess and say that Phillips is the one let go because he might end up being more expensive. The other guy who could be gone is Corey Webster. He’s going to cost $7 million next year and hasn’t played well all season. The Giants are going to need a corner, maybe even two next year.
The Giants may look very different on defense next season. Wholesale changes like Osi talked about? Very possible, but that isn’t necessarily Jerry Reese’s style. Look for some though for 2013.
