During Sunday’s Carolina Panthers game against the Oakland Raiders, quarterback Cam Newton apparently got a little frustrated. After being sacked by Tommy Kelly, Newton kicked the Raiders defensive player. Then Newton got kicked out of the game, received a penalty and got fined. Oh wait, he’s not Ndamukong Suh, so none of those happened.
Kelly received a fifteen yard penalty for unnecessary roughness and Newton’s kick went unpunished. Earlier this year, Suh accidentally kicked Houston Texans Matt Schaub, and became the hottest talked about topic for several weeks. The Detroit Lions star got accused of dirty play by Boomer Esiason and Warren Sapp. Players lashed out at Suh saying they wouldn’t want him as a teammate. Suh was fined $30,000 for his kick that was on video. Newton’s kick captured on video (Watch here) received nothing.
Later on in the game, Newton got frustrated and bumped referee Jerome Boger. Newton received a fifteen yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, but somehow was allowed to stay in the game. Earlier today, Newton was given a $21,000 fine for his bump with the NFL ref. Despite his reputation and several NFL fines, Suh has never hit a referee, unlike Newton and Sapp. There is a NFL rule that says players are to be ejected if they make unnecessary contact with a referee, so I’m not sure how Newton stayed in the game.
It must be nice to be Newton, beloved by fans and the NFL alike. If Suh makes it through a complete game with a kick to a player and a bump to a referee, he would probably be forced into early retirement with an indefinite suspension. I guess that’s what happens when you’re labeled a “dirty player” by the entire league.
