Sean Payton Agrees In Principle To Contract Extension With New Orleans Saints
Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints were in the news a lot for things they probably did not enjoy. The team struggled through a down year while Payton served a year long suspension for his role in Bountygate. Rumors were flying that he would end up leaving the team, but it appears that those fears can be put to rest.
I am reporting the Saints and HC Sean Payton have “agreed in principle” to a new multi-year contract extension to remain head coach of the Saints
That comes from Jay Glazer, who is always on top of things like this. The league has already stopped one contract extension from going through but this one will probably hold up. The league was shown in a bad light for its bounty work so they do not want to deal with another PR nightmare. This move works out well for all parties involved.
The Saints simply could not let Payton reach the open market. He would have gotten a lot of money from someone to coach their team. If the Saints did not have Payton, things could have came apart quickly for the team. They really struggled without him this year, so they avoided that situation for a long time.
This move is going to put the Saints right back on the map next year. If they do not contend for a playoff spot, there is something wrong. Payton is one of the best minds in the business and he is going to be very happy with this team for a long time.
