Indianapolis Colts: Dwight Freeney Top 5 Memorable Performances in RCA Dome/Lucas Oil Stadium

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The Indianapolis Colts will host division rival the Houston Texans tomorrow in Lucas Oil Stadium. The game is the season and home finale as the Colts most likely won’t host a playoff game for this season’s playoffs.

Indianapolis clinched the five seed with a 20-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend and secured a playoff berth after winning only two games last year. If the Colts want to host a playoff game this year, it will be in the AFC Championship Game where they and the Cincinnati Bengals need to win both playoff games. That’s highly unlikely.

That means this likely will be Dwight Freeney’s last game in front of the Colts faithful wearing the home blue uniforms. Freeney, is a free agent next season and it’s all but certain he will not be back for his 12th season in the NFL.

Freeney, is making an NFL high $18 million dollars this year and there’s no way the Colts who despite their 10 wins and playoff berth are in a rebuilding mode. There’s absolutely no way they will pay him more than $5-7 million a year next season and I don’t think the future hall of famer will take a $11-13 million dollar pay cut.

The reason why the Colts won’t bring him back is he’s not an outside linebacker. He was moved to that position this year with the new scheme, but he hasn’t thrived. Freeney has career lows in tackles (10), sacks (4), and forced fumbles (1). He’s been a handicap actually in this system and there’s no way he is back.

That all means fans need to cherish seeing him in Colts blue tomorrow. He usually plays well at home take a look back in memory lane in his top five performances in the old RCA Dome or Lucas Oil Stadium.

5. 12/5/04 vs. Tennessee Titans- RCA Dome

The Colts played out of their minds good in this divisional contest with the Tennessee Titans. They won the game 51-14 and Dwight Freeney was a key to the victory.

Freeney, finished the game with three sacks, a forced fumble, and four tackles. His constant disruption of the Titans passing game was the main reason why they were held to only 14 points.

This was a huge game for Freeney.

4. 11/1/10 vs. Houston Texans- Lucas Oil Stadium (Monday Night Football)

Usually when the lights are on Dwight Freeney has his best games. After the Colts were manhandled in Reliant Stadium in the opening week against the Houston Texans, they came back and dominated them 30-17 in a raucous crowd in Lucas Oil Stadium on Monday Night Football.

Freeney kept disrupting anything Texans quarterback Matt Schaub wanted to do and had a big night. He finished with two sacks and a forced fumble to lead the Colts’ defense to an AFC South win. The victory helped propel the Colts to a division title later in the season and propel them to a Super Bowl appearance.

3. 9/19/10 vs. New York Giants- Lucas Oil Stadium (Sunday Night Football)

The primetime lights were on once again in the 2010 season when the Colts met up with the New York Giants in the Manning Bowl. The Week 2 matchup was a must win as Indianapolis didn’t want to drop to 0-2 to start the season off.

The hype was huge as everyone wanted to see Peyton’s younger brother Eli playing against his brother in Indianapolis for the first time. Freeney made sure it wasn’t a pleasant visit for the youngest Manning as he pressured Eli all night.

Freeney ended up with two sacks, two forced fumbes, and three tackles to help the Colts win 38-14 in front of a very loud crowd.

2. 9/25/05 vs. Cleveland Browns- RCA Dome

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

It was hard not to make this performance number one due to how well Freeney played. The Colts’ offense struggled for this entire Week 2 game as they only scored 13 points. The team was led by Freeney and the defense that day and helped secure a Colts victory.

Freeney had three sacks, one forced fumble, and six tackles. The three sacks were tied for a game high while the six tackles is a career high for one game.

Without Freeney, the Colts certainly would have lost this game.

1. 12/18/06 vs. Cincinnati Bengals- RCA Dome (Monday Night Football)

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Fittingly the top performance of Freeney at home came with the primetime lights on. The Monday Night Football crew came to the RCA Dome in a battle of I-74 with the Colts hosting the Cincinnati Bengals. The game to this day is still one of the loudest crowds I’ve ever witnessed for a game. The tone was deafening and Freeney thrived.

Freeney rushed Carson Palmer all night and was a pain in the Bengals’ side. He had three sacks, three forced fumbles, and four tackles to help lead the Colts to a big 34-16 victory to help propel this team to a division crown and a magical season which ended in a Super Bowl title.
