NFL Rumors: Will the Next New York Jets GM be a Gamble?
The New York Jets have fired GM Mike Tannenbaum and rumors are floating around that the Jets have reached out to San Francisco 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble about filling the vacancy. Gamble has been in the NFL for 24 years and has spent the last seven years with the 49ers where he has helped build their defense into one of the best in the NFL.
Gamble is likely to have several options as the Jacksonville Jaguars have also asked permission speak with him regarding their general manager vacancy.
However, the Jets might have the inside track as Gamble worked for the Jets as a quality-control defensive assistant under Rich Kotite in 1995 and 1996. However, some around the league believe the Jets’ insistence on keeping Rex Ryan around as head coach could be a deal breaker for Gamble and some other general manager candidates.
Prior to joining the 49ers, Gamble was a college scout under Bill Polian with the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 to 2004. He interviewed with the St. Louis Rams in February for their vacant general manager position before the Rams hired Les Snead.
Gamble might be the hottest name on the GM market this season but none of the teams with current vacancies really sounds appealing. The Jets, Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, and Arizona Cardinals are among the teams currently looking for a new GM.
As of right now, only the Jaguars and Jets have requested the 49ers’ permission to interview Gamble. If no other teams jump in the mix the Jets’ job might be more desirable based on the fact that the Jets will be getting rid of Tim Tebow while the Jaguars are rumored to be bringing Tebow in and bringing the media circus that seems to follow him wherever he goes.
Gamble would be a great fit for the New York Jets as he has a ton of experience in scouting college players and has helped build two excellent franchises in the Colts and 49ers and the Jets could use someone who can identify good college players after Tannenbaum has spent years taking chances on players who have not panned out.
If Gamble doesn’t desire to work with Rex Ryan the Jets should fire Ryan too and hire a coach Gamble would want to work with. It is time for the Jets to end the circus and get back to winning football and Gamble is their best option to do that.
