With the season over for the New Orleans Saints the team opted to make some moves right away. No coaches were fired on “Black Monday” but the Saints wasted no time in bolstering their roster. The team announced today that five players were signed to future contracts.
The players that were signed include: WR Jarred Fayson, WR Andy Tanner, CB Ryan Steed, OG Ryan Lee, and DE Braylon Broughton. All of these players appeared on the Saints’ practice squad at some point in the season and they will be competing for roster spots for next season.
One of the players that stands out to me is Tanner. Tanner nearly made the active roster after an impressive pre-season showing. However, the Saints were stacked at the wide receiver position and Tanner had to settle for a practice squad slot. In the upcoming season it could be difficult for Tanner to secure a spot on the active roster since the Saints are still loaded up with wide receivers.
As far as the other players go it will be difficult for any of them to secure a roster spot as well, but there are some intriguing prospects. Lee could have a shot since the Saints’ offensive line is getting older and he could provide some youth for the line. Also, Broughton could be a nice insurance policy for the defensive line as some of the current players might not be with the Saints next season.
The Saints already have next season on their minds and they are getting an early start to their off-season transactions. These five players will compete for a spot on the active roster but only time will tell if they can make it to the 53-man roster.
