I felt that the rookie campaign from Ryan Tannehill was poor. I love this young man between the ears, but his quarterback skills leave a ton to be desired.
In the off-season I would hope that Tanny is studying the game film from his action vs AFC East teams as we know he will face them all twice every season. This season Miami finished in first or second place in the division for just the second time in their last seven seasons. In the last 10 seasons Miami is a putrid 24-36 vs their division foes.
For Miami to get back to relevance then they need Tannehill to get much better vs teams in the division. In the last 10 seasons Miami has gone 4-2 just three times, and that is (by far) their best record vs the AFC East.
Tannehill was 1-1 vs the Buffalo Bills this season. He was just 27 for 53 for just 271 yards in his two games vs the Bills. Tanny had three touchdowns vs the Bills (only AFC East team he threw a touchdown against…yikes) and a pair of interceptions.
The second meeting vs the New York Jets ended very quickly for Tanny with an injury, so his stats vs them are for approx 1.10 games. Tannehill was a putrid 18 for 41 vs the Jets for a measly 214 yards. He had zero touchdowns vs the Jets, and he tossed an interception that was returned for a touchdown. That pick-6 took that week 3 game from being in Miami’s control and put the game on the losing path for Miami.
Tannehill’s 52% completion percentage vs the New England Patriots was his best vs any division foe (yikes). Tanny had 421 yards vs the Patriots, but he was sacked a whopping 10 times. Film study is needed to help him understand how Bill Belichick designs his defenses to confuse opposing quarterbacks, especially young ones. Tannehill had zero touchdowns, and one interception vs the Pats.
I would also want Tannehill to study the Indianapolis Colts tape as Miami will play Indy again in 2013. Tanny can see what he did well in that game and build on that. He was 22 for 38 in that game for a whopping 290 yards, plus a touchdown vs zero interceptions.
The Bills and Patriots game films are even more important when you consider they run 4-3 base defenses and the majority of Miami’s 2013 opponents also run 4-3 base defenses.
Four of Tannehill’s six worst quarterback rankings came in games vs AFC East opponents. He has a ton of areas that require development/improvements, but he can start with understanding how AFC East teams are trying to attack him. Steps forward and better play within the division in 2013 are absolute musts from this young man.
