Washington Redskins Organization Should Be Punished For Robert Griffin III Injury

In Week 15, Dr. James Andrews stated that he never cleared Robert Griffin III to re-enter the game after he injured his knee against the Baltimore Ravens. The Washington Redskins and Mike Shanahan let Griffin go back into the game. Griffin is now hurt again.

The injury happened after Griffin got his cleat stuck in grass during the Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks. Now, that injury could cost the Redskins their franchise player and potentially set them back a few years. I don’t want to talk about how this injury is on Shanahan’s shoulders. My fellow writer Riley Schmitt wrote about that in a great article here.

Instead, I first want to address the Redskins as an organization. I find it amazing that in this day and age that a team could ignore what a doctor says, especially how the NFL stresses “player safety”. I hope that Roger Goodell fines the Redskins a lot. I think that Goodell should take away draft picks as well.

The Redskins knew that Griffin being injured again was a possibility and that Dr. Andrews didn’t want him to play. Dr. Andrews said before the game “I’ve been a nervous wreck letting him come back as quick as he has.  He’s doing a lot better this week, but he’s still recovering and I’m holding my breath because of it.”

It is easy to blame Shanahan and he should be blamed. However, the Redskins management and the whole organization should get the blame as well. Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen should have just as much blame as Shanahan.

So, shame on the Redskins as organization for going against doctor’s orders and putting a player at risk. If Goodell does nothing then his “player safety” mantra is nothing but a joke.
