New York Giants Providing Better Playoff Competition?
If the New York Giants would’ve gotten everything they hoped for in the final week of the season, they would’ve received the #6 seed and played the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card Round. The Green Bay Packers ended up as the #3 seed because they lost to the Minnesota Vikings in the final week to finish 11-5, worst than the 49ers’ record of 11-4-1.
The Vikings ended up as the #6 seed and faced the Packers in Lambeau Field, and there was literally no competition in the game as the Packers easily rolled to a victory. The Vikings were hoping QB Christian Ponder’s injury wasn’t that serious, but it was serious enough for him to not suit up for the game.
In came QB Joe Webb, who many thought would provide a difficult challenge for the Packers’ defense since he can run with the football as well. However, Webb definitely showed he is not worthy of being a starting quarterback in this league, as he was miserable. Many wonder if the Vikings would’ve had a chance to win if Ponder suited up.
I believe things wouldn’t have been different even if Ponder played. Ponder has not been provided with any receiving weapons outside of WR Percy Harvin, and Ponder has also made some careless mistakes in the most critical moments. Simply put, the Vikings were not providing any competition for anyone in the playoffs.
On the other hand, if the Giants would’ve been able to make it, they are very familiar with beating the Packers and the 49ers. The Giants have done so in the regular season, and they also did so in last year’s playoffs on the way to their championship. Out of all the NFC teams that had an opportunity to get the #6 seed, the Giants would’ve provided the most competition.
However, the Giants didn’t do what they needed to do in order to make the playoffs. The Vikings were able to beat the Packers and the Houston Texans in order to capture the final seed, so they are very deserving even though they had very little chance of winning a playoff game. Playoff experience is what this young team needs. They can build from this.
