The Washington Redskins are the sad sack franchise of the NFL. The Redskins hit the proverbial jackpot when they selected quarterback Robert Griffin III with the second overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft. Griffin III became everything Washington had hoped for and more, guiding the Redskins to a 10-6 record and the NFC East division title in 2012.
However, Griffin III aggravated his right knee injury in the Redskins’ 24-14 NFC Wild Card loss to the Seattle Seahawks. His injury could be worse than anticipated. According to sources, Griffin III suffered partial tears in the ACL and LCL in his right knee, leaving his playing status unkown for the 2013 NFL season. It’s a crushing blow for a franchise and fan base that has hitched their fortunes to Griffin III, the 2011 Heisman trophy winner.
It’s been a while since a rookie has energized a floundering professional franchise. The man nicknamed RG3 has rejuvenated the Washington Redskins not only with his solid, spectacular play, but with his calm, professional demeanor. The franchise gave up several draft picks to select Griffin III as their quarterback for the next 10 years. Now, that may not materialize, much to the despondency of the Redskins’ faithful.
If that’s the case, the Redskins will have to turn to quarterback Kirk Cousins to anchor the Washington offense in the near future. Even if Griffin III can get himself back on the field after intense rehabilitation, it’s hard to imagine him returning to the status he once enjoyed before his injury. Griffin III made his offense better than they really were. Other than running back Alfred Morris, the talent for Griffin III to work with at the offensive skill positions is average at best.
While Cousins has proven to be an adequate quarterback, he does not have the transcendent tangibles that RG3 possesses. Cousins does represent an upgrade from quarterback Rex Grossman, who was the Redskins’ starting quarterback before Griffin III arrived because Washington needed someone to play the position.
If Griffin III can’t return to the dominance he once exhibited before his injury, it will be dark days ahead for the Washington Redskins. Sure, Cousins can win a few games for Washington, but the Redskins’ fan base were “all in” on RG3 being the Redskins’ quarterback. After a 10-6 playoff season in 2012, Redskins’ fans may have to accept no better than 8-8 in the near future either without Griffin III, or an extremely limited Griffin III.
At least the 2012 NFL season provided great excitement for the Washington Redskins because of RG3. It remains to be seen if he is able to return to action in 2013. At the very least, Griffin III’s rookie campaign has given Redskins’ fans a glimpse of a great talent, even if it could only be for one season.
