The Dallas Cowboys are the dumbest team in the NFL. Plain and simple. On Monday, the team fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan after his second and best season in Dallas. He was the best thing that’s happened to the Cowboys coaching-wise in a decade yet team owner and general manager Jerry Jones let him go instead of the real problem on the sidelines–head coach Jason Garrett. This is an extremely moronic move that will haunt Dallas in 2013 and beyond.
To say the Cowboys’ defense was awful before Ryan arrived in January of 2011 is a drastic understatement. This was a unit that gave up the second-most points of any team in the NFL before Ryan was hired. In his first season, Ryan bumped that up to 16th but this past year it was back down to 25th. Why? Because over half his defense wasn’t on the field.
The Cowboys’ two best defensive players are linebackers Sean Lee and Bruce Carter. You need to watch more film if you think it’s DeMarcus Ware or anyone else. Ryan was without Lee and Carter (his two leading tacklers) for a majority of the season, yet managed to get Herculean efforts out of guys like Ernie Sims and Alex Albright. Heck, he was playing with third- and fourth-string linebackers for most of the season and Dallas still was in contention for the NFC East crown in Week 17.
If the Cowboys had any other defensive coordinator this past season, they would have finished 6-10 at best with the worst defense in the NFL. Only Ryan could have managed to get the performance out of this hobbled unit that he did. Do you think Dave Campo could have gotten 10 tackles and a sack out of free agent pickup Ernie Sims in a must-win game on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals? Not a chance, and Ryan knows that.
“I inherited a team that was 31st in the league in defense and made them better,” Ryan said. “I [expletive] made them a hell of a lot better. I’ll be out of work for like five minutes.”
Truer words were never spoken.
Arrogant? Yeah. Cocky. You betcha. Right on the money? Absolutely.
Ryan’s starters were injured, his backups were injured, his backups’ backups were injured and he still had this defense playing worlds better than it did for a decade prior. He had guys like Eric Frampton (who?) starting at safety and got quality production out of them. He’s one of the best defensive coordinators in the league and whenever his new team plays Dallas, that team will crush the Cowboys with an incredible defensive performance.
The injuries are not an excuse. The Cowboys’ defense was better in 2012 than it has been in a very long time under Ryan despite all the injuries. Jerry is blind to that fact and that’s why he’s the worst general manager in professional sports. He should be fitted for a straight jacket and locked up with Garrett. The Cowboys have been the laughing stock of the league for a long time and this latest idiotic move proves that won’t change anytime soon.
