Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan was thorough in his search for his new general manager and he hit a home run with Dave Caldwell.
Caldwell most recently served as the director of player personnel for the Atlanta Falcons under their general manager Thomas Dimitroff. Since Caldwell, who originally joined the Falcons in 2008 as their director of college scouting, came to town, they have been a consistent playoff contender in an extremely tough conference. All of the first round picks while Caldwell was with the Falcons, most notably quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones, are still important contributors on a team that is currently the top seed in the NFC side of the NFL playoffs.
Prior to taking his job with the Falcons, Caldwell worked with legendary general manager Bill Polian with both the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts. Polian is credited with building the Buffalo Bills team that went to the Super Bowl for four consecutive seasons in the early 90’s and the Colts team that saw a tremendous amount of success during the 2000’s. Caldwell had a hand in shaping the Colts roster that eventually won the Super Bowl in 2006.
Not only is Caldwell linked to one of the best general managers of the last 25 years, but at age 38 he is a young guy with what most NFL insiders consider as a bright future ahead of him. The success of the teams he has been working for during his time as a scout suggests that he has an eye for talent that the Jaguars roster is so desperately in need of.
Only time will tell if Caldwell will be a successful general manager, but for now Jaguars fans should be excited about the potential of the franchise under his direction.
