New York Giants Need Better Linebackers

The New York Giants suffered from poor play in yet another second half swoon that ended up costing them an opportunity to advance to the post-season and defend their championship. There is plenty of blame to go around when it comes to who were the main culprits. However, no unit performed more poorly than the linebackers.

LB Chase Blackburn was easily the best Giants’ linebacker this past season, but he is entering free agency this off-season. It remains to be seen whether or not the Giants look to keep Blackburn in a Giants’ uniform, but the Giants don’t need to just worry about that. The Giants really need to get quality linebackers in the draft and through free agency if possible.

It is unknown whether or not LB Michael Boley will be back. Boley didn’t have a good year after a couple of solid seasons with the team. He started off well, with three interceptions in his first three games. However, he hasn’t really been a big impact player ever since. This is a big problem because the Giants do not have another linebacker who has been impactful at all.

LB Jacquain Williams is good in the passing game, with his ability to cover tight ends. However, he has not been quite as effective stopping the run. The Giants have also used LB Spencer Paysinger and LB Mark Herzlich, and they haven’t made an impact at all. The only impact Paysinger and Herzlich have made has been on special teams.

The Giants were horrible defensively, and that was mainly due to their inability to stop the run, in addition to a bunch of communication issues in the secondary. The Giants should make it a priority to upgrade the linebacker position. If not, they’ll be getting the same results as this season.
