The Seattle Seahawks may be on the brink of losing offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, but don’t expect much of a change out of this team’s offensive and defensive production. There are too many wheels turning and the success of this franchise will not be determined by one, two or even a handful of coaches leaving to advance their career.
Seattle has done something special by creating a good team now, as well as setting themselves up for the future. Head coach Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider have built a team full of young players and both should be in the running for best in the league at their respective positions.
On the defense, Seattle finished first in points allowed and finished top five in takeaways. Bradley was a huge part of their success and rumor has it he is flying to finalize a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. He called schemes that resulted in frustration for opposing offenses all year long, but he can be replaced. Carroll coached teams always have a player or coach that will step in to a position and fill it seamlessly.
On the offense, Bevell adapted throughout the season. At first the Seahawks were a team determined to run the ball, but as QB Russell Wilson adjusted to the pressure of being an NFL quarterback, he expanded into one of the most feared offenses in the league. Bevell had his second interview on Tuesday with the Chicago Bears for their head coaching position and the Jacksonville Jaguars asked to talk to him about their own vacancy as the top dog. This is not the end of the world.
Seahawks’ fans need to realize that the fortune of this franchise will not be determined by one coach or even one player. The Seahawks are set for many years of success. Wilson, RB Marshawn Lynch, a young defense and a young offensive line are sure to improve and Carroll is never satisfied. It’s that never ending quest for success that will make the Seahawks a future dynasty.
What is standing in their way?
Their own division. The NFC West is shaping up to be one of the toughest in the league. The San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams are very young teams. They will give the Seahawks a run for their money. QB Colin Kaepernick is going to give Wilson a battle for best QB in the west and QB Sam Bradford is a great clock manager. Young teams always have to worry about getting in their own head. They need to stay humble and the NFC West will be the best for a long time.
