So here we are again, not even a year later and there are already more rumors that the Minnesota Vikings will trade star receiver Percy Harvin. Some of the rumors go into more detail about Harvin, saying he’s still “demanding” a trade, but don’t believe it. After the season the Vikings just had, there’s no way Harvin is going anywhere.
Minnesota beat the Green Bay Packers at home to clinch a Wild Card spot and then lost to the Packers in Green Bay the following week during the playoffs. Granted, the Vikings didn’t have starting quarterback Christian Ponder in that second meeting, but they still probably wouldn’t have won simply because of the Packers’ playoff experience.
Now Harvin wasn’t as big a part of the Vikings’ offense this year as most people thought, but that was primarily due to the outrageous season by running back Adrian Peterson, who broke the 2,000-yard rushing mark and came just nine yards short of breaking Eric Dickerson‘s single-season rushing record.
Still, Harvin is the No. 1 receiving option in Minnesota and you better believe Ponder will do everything in his power to keep Harvin there because if he leaves, the Vikings’ offense will become even more one-dimensional and Ponder’s growth as a quarterback will be hindered. With a young quarterback like Ponder, the Vikings’ coaching staff can’t allow that to happen because he will become dependent on Peterson even more than he is now. Every young quarterback has to have a go-to option through the air or their team cannot succeed. Period.
